Hepatitis is an inflammatory disorder of the liver that is commonly caused by viruses. Other causes include alcohol, drugs, chemicals, toxins, and immune antibodies. The viruses include types A, B, C, and less commonly D and E. Type A hepatitis virus is transmitted by fecal contamination of food or water. Type B and C viruses are transmitted usually through contaminated blood transfusions. Type A is the most common hepatitis seen in the US and its incidence is 1.1 per 100,000.

The common symptoms include:

  • fever
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • loss of appetite
  • abdominal pain
  • fatigue
  • weight loss
  • jaundice (yellow discoloration of eyes, skin and urine)
  • pain in muscles and joints
  • dark urine
  • generalized itching
  • enlarged tender liver
  • stools may become colorless for a short duration

The common goals of treatment of hepatitis of any cause are to maintain good nutrition, prevent further damage to the liver and prevent the spread of the virus to others.
